Discriminative monolingual school name plates on the front of the public schools in Tîrgu-Mureș/Marosvásárhely

Tîrgu Mureș-Marosvásárhely, 2011-December 31, 2014℘

In August 2013 CEMO has filed a second complaint to the National Council for Combating Discrimination against the Mayor of Tîrgu-Mureș/Marosvásárhely due to the non application of the legal obligation set by the Public Administration Law number: 215/2001.

The law stipulates that the local public administration institutions have the obligation to place bilingual plates on the front side of the building that are under their jurisdiction in our case the school network of the town that is managed by the School Directorate of the Mayor’s Office.
Based on the Law on Public Administration the nameplates of the public schools should be bilingual since 2001, however when our NGO has initiated the case each school had monolingual name plate. In its pronouncement NCCD declared the Mayor’s practice discriminative and penalized him with an 8000 RON (approximately 1800 Euros) fine. Following the NCCD’s decision the Mayor implemented the legal obligations and the schools’ nameplates were changed.
